Globally, one out of eight people will be over the 65-year age threshold by 2030. Hong Kong itself is estimated to see its elderly population double in the next 20 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines “age-friendly cities” as those that promote ageing by optimising opportunities for health, participation and security. In 2010, WHO stated that “Making cities age-friendly is one of the most effective policy approaches to responding to demographic ageing.”

This session will address critical issues faced by ageing populations. It will also illustrate the role of philanthropy in bringing about cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing and community engagement for age-friendly cities.
